Azanga Sanitation Outreach

Glory be to God for another successful sanitation outreach at Azanga Basic School, located in Zebilla, a suburb of Bolgatanga in the Bawku West District of the Upper East region of Ghana.  The program, which was held on Monday, 13th January,2020; started at about 10:00am.

The dynamic headteacher and his hardworking staff gathered the pupils at their usual assembly ground, and with a warm reception, gave the opportunity  to the Haven of Love Children’s Foundation to do a brief self introduction and to address the pupils. The foundation’s Finance Director, Mr.Richmond Azampaka, officially welcomed all and sundry, afterwhich he invited Madam Dorcas Awini, the foundation’s Girl Child Coordinator, to speak to the pupils on the topic:“l am a steward of my environment”.

A well delivered talk by Madam Awini, brought to light a few research-proven factors that cause poor sanitation issues in our country. On her list were:

  1. Apathy towards cleanliness.
  2. Laziness in properly disposing off waste in our environment.
  3. Ignorance of the severity of the consequence of an unclean environment.
  4. Lack of dusbins to properly dispose off waste in our environment.

It was in this light that the foundation found it necessary to organize such an outreach with the ultimate goal of promoting Sanitation awareness while eradicating poor sanitation-related illnesses.

At the end of the talk, pupils were given the opportunity to ask questions for clarification and to make contributions. The foundation then donated one waste bin to the school, which was well received by the headteacher.

One of the foundation’s volunteers, Mr.Joseph Ndong, demonstrated to pupils how they could properly  dispose off waste, especially after drinking water from a sachet. In addition, an officer from the district’s office of the Ghana Education service was given the opportunity to address the pupils. He admonished them to make good use of the knowledge that they had been imparted with, as well as the donated waste bin.
